Housed in what was once a tram depot, the sports complex Remisen has now been reimagined as a ceramics co-op and culture house through this adaptive reuse project. LERUM (translated to the clay room) serves as a community hub and creative space and includes various ceramic studios, a cafe, and residences. In contrast to the organically abstract nature of clay and pottery making, the design atmosphere of LERUM is clean-cut and geometric. The minimal color palette and use of light natural materials allow the ceramics to shine, showcasing the work of local artists. All the wooden elements are made of birch, a sustainable and abundant material while the large wood structures are made of cubes of the reclaimed material.

Public entrance into the space is through the cafe, where people are visually greeted by the towering tree form sprouting out of the "stay-case," which acts as both seating and an exhibition structure. Users are invited to linger on the staircase or go up to the library and waiting area on the second floor. An interactive seating structure sits just outside of the cafe and can be enjoyed by both children from the neighboring daycare as well as adults, encouraging users to socialize and enjoy their drinks outdoors during nice weather.

Thresholds are an essential aspect to the design of this space, differentiating and transitioning between public, semi-public, and private areas. A bespoke geometric partition solution was created for this project which allows artists to also store and display their works. The semi-solid nature of the threshold clearly establishes use of space while also maintaining an open layout, fostering a sense of community and collaboration.

In essence, LERUM is a hub for creativity and congregation in the heart of the Østerbro neighborhood. It is a place for both seasoned and novice artists to create beautiful ceramics, while also offering locals a welcoming space to gather.
